1.    Count the pot.
No, this isn’t math homework!  The best players always have a running tally of the pot in their head, and it can be really helpful for those big hands.  Get in the habit of counting the pot now – eventually you will do it by reflex.

2.    Study the discard pile.
If you’re playing stud poker then this is a great memory training exercise that will help you analyze your hand,  and will give you some good old transferable memory skills for hold’em poker, and even blackjack games.

3.    Re play the hand in your head.
If you’re still in the hand and just waiting for your turn, re-play the hand up to the current moment, and analyze each play.

4.    Study the other players.
Mentally go round the table and label the players.  Start with something simple – which ones are loose, which are tight.  Modify your assessment as the game goes on, and as your memory improves try adding more detailed assessments of their poker play styles.

5.    Keep a play book.
Write down key hands, the decisions you made, and why.  Also make notes on other players, and how you played with them. Try to identify their play style, and also how they may view yours.

6.    Make friends with the player on your left.
Everyone loves friends, right?  Find something in common with the player on your left, and start chatting.  You may get a friend out of it, and they may be a little softer on you, and more likely to believe your bluffs.

7.    Play Psychiatrist.
Are you off your game at the moment?  Whether it’s poker or blackjack, you could benefit from considering your mood at the table.  Are you annoyed with something and reflecting it in your play style?  Improve your life, and your game will improve too.

8.    Sleep on it.
Sometimes it is a good idea to walk away from the blackjack or poker table, and take a break.  Leave the casino and clear your head.  Or play something more relaxing, like bingo.
